Second Chance at Life

Sometimes you are drawn to people and you don’t know why.

This is what happened while I was covering an event for Luke's Wings, an organization dedicated to the support of service members who've been wounded in battle. When I cover an event like this, I’m always in awe of the courage, fight and love that fills all of the heroes and their families. But with Jasmine and Brandon, it was so much more.

USMC Staff Sergeant Brandon Dodson was severely wounded in August 2014 in Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device, or IED, detonated and blew off both of his legs, fractured his pelvis and caused many other injuries to his body.

When I met Brandon and his wife Jasmine, you couldn’t tell that they'd just experienced such hardship. They have a way about them that exudes a youthful joy. Maybe it's their bubbly 3 ½ year old son, Indy, or maybe it's how they've embraced the joy of a second chance at life. Either way, I had to photograph this family.

Love and Loss [Family Portraits]

Everyone has a story.

That’s part of what I love about being a photographer. I get to hear and capture the most amazing stories and feel like my photography is part of telling it.

When Haely e-mailed me asking about a Mother’s Day shoot, I knew it’d be fun to photograph her again, but I had an idea what was really in store for the session.

Tommy Jardas is a name you may have heard before, sadly, because it was on the news not too long ago. 12 Marines were involved in a helicopter crash in Hawaii a few months ago.

Tommy was one of those Marines. Tommy was Haely's brother.

I’ve photographed mothers and daughters and grandmother’s before. But when you bring in the added element of great love with great loss, it’s beyond words. Honoring one of America’s heroes and celebrating these beautifully strong women nearly had me in tears.

Thank you Haley and Beth for letting share your story and helping tell Tommy’s.

Brandi + Tim - Destination Wedding [Anguilla]

There isn't much I can say that the pictures don't already.  This was an amazing, laid back, gorgeous, fun, incredible wedding.  It didn't hurt that my office for the weekend was Anguilla and my co-workers were the coolest wedding party around.  Congrats Brandi & Tim!

Sreeya and Shawn - Fall Session [Rock Creek Park, DC]

Sreeya and Shawn are getting married next year, but we took advantage of the beautiful fall colors to take some pictures for them in Rock Creek Park. I'm really excited for their wedding - it's going to take place at Salamander Resort and Spa - swanky!

Congratulations guys! Enjoy :)

The 85mm F/1.2 and Allyn [Studio Portraits]

Allyn's portrait session captured so beautifully by Dominic Della - check out the recent shoot we did!
Typically when I shoot portraits I work with 70-200 lens for the versatility and flexibility of zooming in and out but I chose to shoot this session with the 85mm lens. Here's the results.

The equipment I used:
Canon EOS 5Ds
EF 85mm F/1.2
Profoto D1 Air 1000Watts + 3' Octabox

Terrina and Scott - Engaged!

Just before we "run out" of good weather, I spent a great afternoon with Terrina and Scott in Annapolis for their engagement photo shoot! Although the waterfront was actually closed with fences, we got some really fun shots around the streets by the water (which may or may not involve trespassing) and some in the Naval Academy. Congratulations guys!

Alex, Jack & baby Sprout! [Maternity Photos - DC]

Expecting? Alex and Jack are :). I'm excited to blog about their dual maternity session both at their home and at one of my favorite spots - Rock Creek Park. As a new father I can relate to the excitement and happy to have the opportunity to capture these great moments in their lives.

Get ready guys, this is going to be fun!
